Permitting and Licensure Requirements of Low voltage “limited energy” wiring (98 volts or less)
Permits and inspections are required for all “low voltage, limited energy, data, communications” wiring in all commercial, industrial and residential buildings, excluding one and two family dwellings.
Low voltage “limited energy” wiring and systems (98 volts or less as defined by Rule 61G6-7.001(4), Florida Administrative Code) as outlined in the NEC articles 725 through 830, shall include but not be limited to the installation of, repair of, addition to, design of electrical wiring , fixtures, appliances, thermostats, apparatus, raceways and conduit, and fiber optics (transmission of light over stranded glass) or any part thereof not to exceed 98 volts, when those items are for the purpose for transmitting data, proprietary video (satellite systems which are not part of a community antenna television, cable television or radio distribution system) radio frequency, central vacuum, or electric locks, data distribution networks, home theater systems, surround sound systems, public address systems or telephone systems.
Permits shall only be issued to licensed Electrical Contractors, Limited Energy Systems Specialty Contractors as defined by Florida Administration Code 61G6-7.001. Permit applicants must show proof of license, workers compensation insurance or exemption certificate as required by Florida Statute section 489.510, and insurance required by Rule 61G6-5.008 Florida Administrative Code. Individuals and organizations conforming to the requirements of Florida State Statute 489.503 are exempt from licensure and permitting.
Permits shall include all necessary inspections of any conduit or support system, wiring, cables, boxes, devices, equipment, draft stopping and penetrations of any fire or smoke rated assembly.
