Council Member Teresa Lopez was elected to the Melbourne City Council in November 2014 to serve a four-year term representing District 6 (view a map of Council Districts). Her term will continue until November 2018. She also serves on the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization and is a voting delegate to the Space Coast League of Cities.
Teresa Lopez is actively engaged in her community and is noted for her strengths as an organizer and leader. A critical thinker and visionary who understands the dynamics of change, she has been an informed and fair-minded resident of Brevard since 1993. Mrs. Lopez has been involved in extensive civic and community work for many years. Her leadership has brought significant growth and participation to the organizations and communities she has served.
Mrs. Lopez was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, and raised and educated in the Bronx. She was the first of her family to receive an Associate of Arts degree from Bronx Community College, majoring in Business Administration. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Baruch College in New York City.
Mrs. Lopez’s work history includes six years as an Assistant to the Control of C.P.C. Services, Inc., a commercial finance company, and ten years as the Director of Central Records at Yeshiva University, which ranks among the nation’s leading academic research institutions. After moving to Florida, she received an All-Lines Adjuster License while working with Allstate Insurance Company and her Series 6 and Series 63 Investment Licenses while working with Bank of America. Teresa worked in the banking industry for over 15 years as a Platform Customer Service Representative and a Senior Equity Analyst with JP Morgan Chase.
Her civic interests include strengthening and mobilizing the Hispanic community and helping young women develop their talents and self-esteem by participating in pageant competitions and training them to speak in public forums.
Teresa has organized and led Brevard’s Hispanic community in activities such as the Annual Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Latina Pageants and Brevard County’s Annual Hispanic Business Expo. She is a standing member of Brevard County’s Puerto Rican Day Parade committee and served as past president of the Florida Puerto Rican/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and past first vice president of United Third Bridge, a not-for-profit educational and cultural organization.
As a sitting Melbourne City Council member, she believes in accountability in all phases of local government including budget allocation, police enforcement, and equality for all city employees and residents. Mrs. Lopez believes in equal and fair treatment throughout all of the districts of the City of Melbourne and advocates for a business-friendly environment.
Teresa is the wife of Samuel C. Lopez and claims that her greatest accomplishments and inspirations in life are her two children, Jason and Zena, and her stepchildren Samuel D. Lopez Esq., Samantha and Emmanuel. Her greatest pastime is enjoying the time she spends with her two grandchildren, Carlos Anthony Fernandez and Hayden Alexander Fernandez.
