Officer Involved Shooting-Update

On Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 10:34 PM, the Melbourne Police Department received a call for an armed disturbance in the 3000 block of St Armens Circle. The suspect was acting erratically and walking in the street armed with a handgun. His motives are unknown and no other persons were threatened, but several witnesses described his erratic behavior. Officers responded to the street, located the armed suspect and confronted him in an effort to disarm him. The suspect did not comply with the officers and shots were fired. The suspect was transported to the hospital. No officers or other personnel were injured during this incident.
During this incident, the arrestee, Lewis Nowlin was found to be in possession of the cocked .38 caliber handgun pictured below. Prior to officer’s arrival, Nowlin fired at least one shot while walking through the neighborhood. Nowlin is still in stable condition and is being treated for several gunshot wounds. When he is able to be released, he will be transferred to the Brevard County Detention Center.
As with any case involving an officer shooting the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been requested to conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Per protocol the involved officers, 8-year veteran Ofc Jason McKinney, 8-year veteran Sgt Evan Wells, and 6-year veteran Ofc Timothy Sonnenberg are on paid administrative leave.
